KNOW A WORD: Things Students Need To Know AND How a Teacher Help Them (PART I)


  1. THE MEANING
  • Encourage students to guess the meaning from the context
  • Provide dictionaries or ask them to translate the word if appropriate
  • Ask concept-checking questions
  1. THE FORM

Is it regular or irregular? Transitive or intransitive? Is it a verb/noun/adjective or adverb? Encourage students to record this information.

  1. THE PRONUNCIATION

Ask students to repeat the word, drill the word and mark the stressed syllables. Get them to record the word phonetically.

  1. THE SPELLING

Make sure students are aware of the differences between the spelling of the word and how it is pronounced.

  1. THE GRAMMAR PATTERNS IT FOLLOWS

Ask students to examine the word in context to check if it is countable or uncountable, if it has a dependent preposition, or if it is transitive or intransitive.
