IDIOMS ACTIVITIES FOR ESL/EFL STUDENTS (PART I)

  1. IDIOM INTRODUCTION

Discuss the way people talk. Explain that idioms are phrases that have a meaning different from their literal meaning. Give them examples. Students list as many idioms as they can think of.

  1. IDIOM RESEARCH

Give students a set of 4-5 idioms to research. For each idiom, students find a definition, an example in context & explain its origin (if possible). Students use this set in a dialogue they write together. Each group shares its dialogue with the rest of the class.

  1. LITEREATURE’S IDIOMS

Choose a reading selection that is sprinkled with idioms. Students read the texts. Locate any idioms, discuss them and determine their meanings. Students work with I book each day until their group has dissected each literature selection.
